Skeletal muscle inactivity (sedentary behavior) downregulates genes involved in mitochondrial processes and ATP production, while acute exercise upregulates these pathways, with NR4A3 serving as a key regulator of this metabolic response.

Sedentary time actively suppresses your muscles' ability to produce energy (mitochondrial function). While exercise boosts this, the key takeaway is that prolonged inactivity reverses these benefits. To maintain metabolic health, avoid long periods of sitting, as inactivity actively downregulates the genes responsible for energy production.
