Urbanization and the associated nutrition transition in Sub-Saharan Africa, characterized by increased availability and consumption of energy-dense foods (high fat, sugar, and animal protein) and decreased physical activity, is a primary driver of rising obesity and non-communicable disease rates.
In urbanizing Sub-Saharan African contexts, obesity is driven by structural shifts: increased availability of cheap, energy-dense processed foods (high fat/sugar) and reduced physical activity due to urban lifestyles. Interventions must address food environment and urban planning, not just individual diet advice.
Overall, we show that socioeconomic status, gender, age, parity, physical inactivity, and increased energy, fat, and sugar intake are powerful predictors of overweight and/or obesity.
