Single bouts of exercise increase Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) for a short period (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, EPOC), but this effect is transient and does not significantly contribute to long-term energy balance.
Don't overestimate the 'afterburn' (EPOC) from a workout. It lasts up to 48 hours but is small. Focus on the total energy you burn during the activity and your overall diet, rather than relying on post-exercise metabolic spikes for weight loss.

Many studies of human subjects indicate a short-term elevation in RMR in response to single exercise events (generally termed the excess post-exercise O2 consumption; EPOC). This EPOC appears to have two phases, one lasting < 2 h and a smaller much more prolonged effect lasting up to 48 h.
