Reallocating 30 minutes per day of sedentary time to moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) yields the most potent improvements in cardiovascular disease risk biomarkers, including significant reductions in waist circumference, triglycerides, and insulin, and increases in HDL cholesterol and insulin sensitivity.
To improve your heart health and metabolic markers, swap 30 minutes of sitting for 30 minutes of brisk walking, jogging, or similar moderate-to-vigorous activity. This swap is more effective for lowering insulin and triglycerides than swapping that time for light activity or sleep.
These findings provide evidence that MVPA may be the most potent health-enhancing, time-dependent behavior, with additional benefit conferred from light-intensity activities and sleep duration when reallocated from sedentary time.
