Energy balance
Older men fail to regain lost body weight following a period of underfeeding because they do not exhibit compensatory hyperphagia.
If you are older and lose weight due to illness or stress, your body may not naturally signal you to eat more to recover. You must consciously increase your food intake to regain lost weight, as your body's natural 'catch-up' hunger mechanism may be blunted.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Similarly, following underfeeding, the younger men exhibited hyperphagia while the older men did not... and as a result the older men failed to regain the weight lost during underfeeding.
Why this rating
Same study design, robust metabolic ward controls.
