Telomere-dependent cellular senescence contributes to tissue-specific functional attenuation in aging tissues, such as immunosenescence, cardiovascular disease, and muscle aging.
Aging tissues lose function partly because stem cells run out of division capacity due to telomere shortening. This is a key factor in immune decline and tissue repair issues, though it is not the sole cause of aging.
ModerateQualifiesMEDIUM confidence
First, in a tissue-specific fashion, short telomeres might indicate senescence of (stem) cells, and this might contribute to age-related functional attenuation in this tissue.
Why this rating
The paper explicitly states that 'causal evidence for essential pathways... is still very weak' and much evidence is correlative.
