Cold exposure activates brown adipose tissue (BAT) in a subset of adults, significantly increasing energy expenditure and thermogenesis, but this response is strongly inhibited by high body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage.
If you have detectable brown fat, exposing your body to cold (like a cool room or shower) will significantly increase your calorie burn. However, if you are obese, your body's ability to do this is blunted. You might not feel the 'burn' or see the same metabolic spike as a lean person, but the mechanism is still there in some individuals. Focus on maintaining or building metabolic health rather than relying solely on cold for weight loss if you are obese.
Obese individuals demonstrate a blunted CIT combined with low BAT activity... BAT-positive subjects showed higher CIT, indicating that BAT is also in humans involved in adaptive thermogenesis.
