Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyrate, produced by gut bacteria (e.g., Faecalibacterium, Butyricimonas) promote skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis, insulin sensitivity, and prevent muscle protein catabolism.
Focus on eating prebiotic fibers (like those in onions, garlic, bananas, oats) to feed the bacteria that make butyrate. This supports your muscles' energy factories (mitochondria) and helps your body handle insulin better.

The SCFA produced by gut bacteria... can enter systemic circulation and be absorbed by skeletal muscle cells... SCFA upregulate the NAD-dependent deacetylase sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) receptor, which is a modulator of mitochondrial biogenesis... butyrate... may be responsible for the activation of several regulatory pathways... resulting in increased ATP production.
