This condition is linked to a specific imbalance in gut bacteria (less Firmicutes, more Gram-negative bacteria) that correlates with liver stress. While this study is observational, it suggests that maintaining gut health through a diverse, fiber-rich diet (to support SCFA-producing bacteria) may be a relevant consideration for managing nonobese NAFLD, alongside standard medical care.
This novel study indicated that intestinal dysbiosis was associated with nonobese NAFLD and might increase the risk of NAFLD progression... individuals with NAFLD had higher fecal levels of the phylum Bacteroidetes... and lower levels of Firmicutes...
