Short-term high-intensity swimming training significantly reduces infarct size and cellular damage (measured by CPK levels) in a rat model of myocardial ischemia, demonstrating a protective preconditioning effect against heart attack damage.

This finding is specific to a rat model of heart attack. For humans, regular exercise is generally known to improve cardiovascular health, but this specific protocol (3 hours/day of high-intensity swimming for 3 weeks in young rats) is not a recommended human prescription. Consult a physician before starting high-intensity regimens, especially if you have heart risk factors.

Morphological staining found that infarct sizes was lower in EXC (14.7 ± 0.3%) and IPC’s (17.6 ± 0.5%) than CON (26.2 ± 0.6%). CPK concentration in cardiac, kidney in EXC (0.80), IPC (0.92) were lower than CON (4.03) in blood exam. This result indicated there was lower cellular damage in EXC and IPC.
