Energy balance

Wrist-worn fitness monitors (Apple Watch, Fitbit Charge HR, Samsung Gear S, Mio Alpha) provide accurate heart rate measurements but significantly underestimate energy expenditure, rendering them unreliable for weight management via energy balance tracking.

Do not rely on wrist-worn fitness trackers to dictate your calorie intake for weight loss. While they are good at tracking heart rate, they consistently underestimate calories burned by up to 43%. Use them for general activity trends, but do not use the calorie numbers to justify eating back exercise calories.

These devices accurately measure heart rate. However, estimates of energy expenditure are poor and would have implications for people using these devices for weight loss.
