Higher plasma TMAO levels are associated with higher abundance of Prevotella and Peptococcaceae, and lower abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, linking gut microbiota to a metabolite associated with cardiovascular risk.

TMAO, a metabolite linked to heart disease risk, is produced by gut bacteria from dietary components. Your gut bacteria composition affects your TMAO levels. We confirmed previously detected associations between TMAO and the abundance of Peptococcaceae (P = 4.67 × 10−4) and Prevotella (P = 0.004)... we also observed a negative association between TMAO and the abundance of common gut commensal Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (P = 0.006; FDR <0.08).
