High acute myofibrillar protein synthesis (MyoPS) immediately following resistance training does not predict muscle hypertrophy when muscle damage is high; hypertrophy is instead correlated with attenuated MyoPS responses that occur after muscle damage has subsided.

Do not chase high muscle soreness or assume the biggest spike in protein synthesis after your first few workouts means you are building the most muscle. In the early weeks of a new program, high protein synthesis is largely used to repair damage, not build size. True hypertrophy correlates with later training phases (after ~3 weeks) where muscle damage has decreased, allowing protein synthesis to be directed toward fiber growth. Focus on consistent training rather than maximizing acute post-workout spikes or soreness.
