Higher body mass index (BMI) is positively associated with increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Asian populations, with the strength of this association varying by age, geography, and lifestyle factors.
Maintaining a healthy body weight is crucial for preventing type 2 diabetes in Asian populations. This study shows that as BMI increases, so does the risk of diabetes, with the risk being particularly strong in younger individuals and those in South Asia (India, Bangladesh). While the absolute risk at any given BMI might differ from Western populations, the positive correlation remains consistent. Focus on maintaining a BMI within the healthy range (22.5-24.9 kg/m2) through balanced nutrition and physical activity.
