Carriers of the apolipoprotein E ε4 allele experience a magnified risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease when exposed to adverse midlife lifestyle factors, specifically physical inactivity, high saturated fat intake, frequent alcohol consumption, and smoking.
If you carry the ApoE ε4 gene, your lifestyle choices at midlife (ages 40-60) are critically important for your brain health later in life. Specifically, avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining physical activity, and managing saturated fat intake are not just general health advice but essential risk-reduction strategies for you. Neglecting these factors multiplies your dementia risk significantly more than it does for people without the gene.
Physical inactivity, alcohol drinking and smoking increased the risk of dementia/AD particularly among the apoE ε4 carriers. Furthermore, low–moderate intake of polyunsaturated, and moderate–high intake of saturated fats were associated with an increased risk of dementia/AD more pronouncedly among apoE ε4 carriers.
Why this rating
Large population-based cohort (n=1449) with long follow-up (21 years), though observational design limits causal inference compared to RCTs.
