Age-related declines in explosive strength and power are greater than the declines in maximal isometric strength.
As you age, your ability to generate power drops faster than your ability to generate maximal force. To stay functional and prevent falls, you must train for speed and power, not just maximal strength. This means incorporating explosive movements with appropriate loads, even if your maximal strength remains relatively preserved.
Explosive strength and power seem to decrease with increasing age even more than maximal isometric strength in both actions.
Why this rating
Clear comparative data between age groups showing statistically significant differences in power vs strength metrics.

- Maximal power output in the upper extremity is optimized at loads of 30-45% of one-repetition maximum (1RM), whereas maximal power in the lower extremity is optimized at loads of 60-70% of 1RM.Good
- High antagonist muscle activation in elderly men limits movement efficiency and may contribute to reduced power output.Good
