Rural-to-urban migration in India is causally associated with increased prevalence of obesity and diabetes, driven by adoption of urban lifestyle factors including higher fat intake and reduced physical activity.
Moving to an urban environment often brings higher risks of obesity and diabetes due to dietary changes (more fat/sugar) and less physical activity. To maintain health, migrants must consciously counter these environmental shifts by maintaining healthy eating habits and staying active, rather than assuming their rural health baseline will persist.
Migration into urban areas is associated with increases in obesity, which drive other risk factor changes. Migrants have adopted modes of life that put them at similar risk to the urban population.
