Six weeks of low-volume sprint interval training (SIT) improves peripheral arterial distensibility and endothelial function to a similar extent as high-volume traditional endurance training (ET) in healthy young adults.
If you are healthy and want to improve your arterial health, you can achieve similar benefits to long, moderate cycling sessions by doing short, intense sprint intervals. Perform 4-6 sprints of 30 seconds each, 3 times a week, with 4.5 minutes of rest between sprints. This takes much less time than traditional endurance training but improves peripheral artery stiffness and function just as effectively.
We conclude that SIT is a time-efficient strategy to elicit improvements in peripheral vascular structure and function that are comparable to ET.
