The prevalence of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity in the Korean population varies significantly based on the definition used (height-adjusted vs. weight-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle mass), with weight-adjusted definitions revealing much higher prevalence rates, particularly in women.

If you are assessing muscle loss in older adults, especially women, using only height-adjusted muscle mass might miss many cases. Weight-adjusted muscle mass reveals significantly higher rates of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. For accurate health risk assessment in the elderly, consider using weight-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM/weight) rather than just height-adjusted (ASM/height^2), as the latter may underestimate the problem.
