Reallocating 2 hours of daily sitting time to standing significantly improves fasting glucose, triglycerides, and lipid ratios, whereas reallocating that same time to stepping (walking) additionally reduces BMI and waist circumference.
To improve your blood sugar and cholesterol, try to stand for 2 hours a day instead of sitting. You don't need to walk; just standing helps. If you also want to lose weight or reduce belly fat, you must replace sitting with walking (stepping) for those 2 hours, as standing alone won't change your waist size. Start by standing during phone calls or while cooking.
Sitting-to-standing reallocations were only significantly (P < 0.05) associated with approximately 2% lower fasting plasma glucose, 11% lower triglycerides, 6% lower total/HDL-cholesterol ratio, and 0.06 mmol/L higher HDL-cholesterol per 2 h/day. Sitting-to-stepping reallocations were only significantly associated with approximately 11% lower BMI, 7.5 cm lower waist circumference, 11% lower 2-h plasma glucose, 14% lower triglycerides, and 0.10 mmol/L higher HDL-cholesterol per 2 h/day
Why this rating
The study is cross-sectional and observational, using isotemporal substitution to infer causality, which is weaker than randomized controlled trials but stronger than simple correlation.
