Caloric restriction-induced weight loss causes significant bone mineral density (BMD) loss at clinically important fracture sites (hip and spine), whereas exercise-induced weight loss preserves BMD at these sites despite similar magnitude of weight loss.

If you are losing weight through dieting, you risk losing bone density at your hip and spine. To protect your bones, you must incorporate regular exercise into your weight loss plan. Exercise-induced weight loss preserves bone density, whereas diet-induced weight loss does not.
