Oral administration of berberine requires gut microbiota-mediated conversion to dihydroberberine (dhBBR) for effective intestinal absorption; without this microbial conversion, berberine bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy are significantly reduced.

Berberine's effectiveness depends on your gut health. It is not absorbed directly; your gut bacteria must first convert it into dihydroberberine. If you are taking antibiotics or have gut dysbiosis, berberine may not work well because this conversion process is impaired. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is essential for berberine to function as intended.
