Energy balance

Intermittent energy restriction (2 days/week of 500-600 kcal) is clinically equivalent to continuous energy restriction (1200-1500 kcal/day) for improving glycemic control (HbA1c) in patients with type 2 diabetes over 12 months.

If you have type 2 diabetes, eating very little (500-600 calories) on just two days a week can lower your blood sugar (HbA1c) just as effectively as eating less every single day. However, you must work with your doctor to adjust diabetes medications, especially insulin or sulfonylureas, to avoid low blood sugar, particularly in the first few weeks.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Intermittent energy restriction is comparable to continuous energy restriction for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Why this rating

Randomized noninferiority trial with 137 participants, but limited generalizability to poorly controlled diabetes.
