Lipophagy, the selective autophagic degradation of lipid droplets, serves as a cytoprotective mechanism that prevents lipotoxicity and cell death (necrosis/apoptosis) by mobilizing fatty acids for energy production (ATP synthesis) and reducing toxic lipid accumulation.
