In overweight and obese women, twice-daily exenatide treatment yields long-term weight loss outcomes similar to a hypocaloric diet with matched placebo injections, with no significant difference in the proportion of super responders (≥10% weight loss).
For overweight women, twice-daily exenatide does not guarantee better long-term weight loss than a strict hypocaloric diet alone. In fact, the study showed similar rates of significant weight loss (≥10%) between the drug and diet groups. The high response in the diet group suggests that the ritual of pre-meal injections may aid adherence. Patients should weigh the burden of daily injections against the potential benefit, as diet alone can be highly effective for early responders.
In a population of early high responders, longer term weight loss with exenatide treatment is similar to that achieved with a hypocaloric diet.
