Higher dietary inflammatory potential, as measured by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), is directly associated with increased general and abdominal obesity indices (BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio), independent of total energy intake and adherence to the Mediterranean diet.

Focus on reducing the inflammatory potential of your diet, not just total calories. Prioritize anti-inflammatory foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains) and limit pro-inflammatory foods (refined grains, sugary drinks, processed meats, excessive saturated fats). This approach may help manage weight and abdominal fat, especially if you have cardiovascular risk factors, by addressing underlying inflammation.
