Plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) generally exhibit lower energy, total fat, and saturated fat content, but higher fiber and carbohydrate content compared to animal meat, though they often contain higher sodium levels and have lower amino acid bioavailability.
When choosing plant-based meat alternatives, expect lower saturated fat and higher fiber compared to animal meat, but be mindful of potentially higher sodium levels. Note that protein quality (bioavailability) may be lower than animal meat, so variety in protein sources is important. These products are not nutritionally identical to meat.
These studies found lower energy and total and saturated fat contents and higher total carbohydrates, sugars, and fibers in PBMAs compared to meat-based products. On the other hand, salt content showed contrasting results. Furthermore, plant-based and meat-based products generally presented similar amounts of total proteins despite large differences in the contents of single amino acids... animal meat showed higher protein digestibility than PBMAs, which, in turn, have a negative impact on amino acid bioavailability.
