Energy balance

Loss of the zinc transporter ZIP13 promotes the biogenesis of beige adipocytes and increases energy expenditure, conferring resistance to high-fat diet-induced obesity and improving glucose tolerance.

While you cannot directly 'take' a ZIP13 inhibitor, this research highlights that increasing beige fat activity (through cold exposure or exercise) may improve metabolic health. The paper suggests that targeting the molecular identity of fat cells is a promising future treatment for obesity.

Zip13-KO mice showed resistance to high fat diet-induced obesity [74]. ... Zip13-KO mice reportedly have improved glucose tolerance and insulin tolerance compared with control mice in addition to increased energy expenditure [74].

Why this rating

Based on knockout mouse models with consistent phenotypic results (obesity resistance, improved glucose tolerance), though human translation is still emerging.
