Energy balance
Restoration of energy balance, rather than absolute body weight or fat mass recovery, is the primary physiological driver for the return of ovulation in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea.
If you have stopped menstruating due to weight loss or intense exercise, simply gaining weight back to your 'normal' might not be enough. Your body prioritizes survival over reproduction when energy is scarce. To restore ovulation, you must achieve a positive energy balance. This can sometimes be done by reducing energy expenditure (e.g., less intense exercise) even if body weight or fat mass doesn't change significantly. Prioritize energy availability over absolute fat mass.
Recovery may occur after minimal reacquisition of weight because energy balance is more important than body fat mass.
