Energy balance

Participation in organized sports significantly increases moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) in male adolescents aged 13-16 compared to nonparticipants.

Encourage adolescents to join organized sports to boost their daily physical activity levels. While sport only makes up a fraction of total daily energy expenditure, it significantly increases moderate-to-vigorous activity, which is crucial for health. Be aware that participation often declines with age, so maintaining involvement is key.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Male participants in organized sports spent significantly more time in moderate-to-vigorous activities than nonparticipants... Male sport participants in the 2 age-groups spent less time in sedentary activities than nonparticipants on week-days and across total days.

Why this rating

Cross-sectional observational study with a reasonable sample size (n=165) and objective measures (accelerometry + diary), but lacks causal inference due to design.
