NOS1-expressing glutamatergic neurons in the preoptic area link thermal sensory information to NREM onset and body cooling.
This is a basic science finding explaining how warmth triggers sleep at the neural level. It confirms that sleep initiation is an active process driven by specific brain circuits responding to warmth, rather than a passive state.
StrongSupportsVERY_HIGH confidence
Our data suggest a distinct nitrergic-glutamatergic circuit for linking thermal sensory information to NREM-onset that may reside upstream of a GABAergic sleep ‘switch’... When activity-tagging was repeated in NOS1-CRE mice, these also experienced simultaneous NREM and body cooling.
Why this rating
Based on direct experimental evidence using activity-tagging and CRE mice in animal models.

- Creating a warm microclimate around the skin (31-35°C) via bedding or nesting behavior initiates NREM sleep by triggering distal vasodilation and activating preoptic hypothalamic circuits that link warmth to body cooling.Good
- Small increases in skin temperature (0.4°C within the 31-35°C range) can shorten sleep latency and promote deeper sleep without altering core body temperature.Good
