Increasing daily step count over time (temporal change) is independently associated with a substantial reduction in mortality risk, even after adjusting for baseline step count.
If you are currently active, continuing to increase your daily steps over time provides additional mortality benefits. Even if you start with a lower step count, making an annual increase in your walking volume can significantly lower your risk of death.
