Adherence to a Western dietary pattern is associated with a significantly increased risk of incident gout in men.
Men should limit their intake of red/processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, sweets, desserts, French fries, and refined grains, as this Western dietary pattern is associated with a higher risk of developing gout. Substituting these with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy can mitigate this risk.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
a higher Western dietary pattern score was associated with an increased risk for gout (1.42, 1.16 to 1.74, P=0.005).
Why this rating
Large prospective cohort, long follow-up, validated assessment, adjustment for confounders.
