Dietary fiber interventions consistently increase Bifidobacterium spp. abundance in healthy adults, regardless of whether SCFA levels change significantly.
You can generally expect your gut bacteria to respond to fiber by increasing Bifidobacterium levels. However, this taxonomic shift does not guarantee a measurable increase in beneficial metabolites (SCFAs) in your blood or stool, as metabolic output varies by fiber type and individual microbiome.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Regardless of the differences in treatment duration and detection methods employed, Bifidobacterium spp. increased in most studies [10,11,15,16,20–24,28,32,35,37–39,41,47–49].

More from this paper
- Dietary fiber interventions in healthy adults do not consistently produce significant increases in total or individual short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels, with outcomes strictly dependent on fiber type, dose, and analytical methodology.Good
- The analytical method used to measure SCFAs (e.g., GC vs. HPLC) significantly influences the detection of statistically significant changes, with GC-based methods on plasma/serum showing more frequent significant changes than HPLC on feces.Good
