Skeletal muscle sarcolipin (SLN)-mediated uncoupling of the SERCA pump increases energy expenditure and prevents diet-induced obesity.

This research suggests that increasing the activity of the Sarcolipin (SLN) protein in your skeletal muscles could help your body burn more calories passively, even at rest. While you cannot currently take a 'SLN pill', this mechanism highlights why maintaining muscle mass (especially slow-twitch fibers) is crucial for metabolic health and weight management. Future therapies may target this pathway to treat obesity without requiring intense physical activity.

These studies led us to suggest that SLN expression can create both energy demand and increase energy expenditure through increased oxidative metabolism and can be a novel mechanism to increase energy expenditure in muscle.
