Maximal exercise testing protocols yield more significant predictive results for cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality than submaximal protocols when measuring heart rate recovery.

If you want to use HRR for accurate risk assessment, you must push to maximal effort during the exercise test. Submaximal efforts may not reveal the full prognostic value of your heart rate recovery.
