Baseline abundance of specific gut microbiota species (particularly Clostridium sphenoides, Eubacterium ruminantium, and Clostridium felsineum) can predict an obese individual's metabolic response (specifically cholesterol reduction) to dietary interventions.

If you are obese or have metabolic syndrome, your gut bacteria determine whether a high-fiber or prebiotic diet will lower your cholesterol. You cannot assume a diet will work just because it works for others. Testing your baseline microbiota (specifically levels of Clostridium sphenoides and related Firmicutes) can predict if you will benefit from specific dietary changes, allowing for personalized nutrition rather than trial-and-error.
