Low absolute knee extension strength (<19.2 kg in men, <18.0 kg in women) and low leg power (<105 W in men, <64 W in women) measured at a single time point are strong predictors of future mobility decline and incident mobility disability in older adults, whereas 3-year changes in strength and power do not predict mobility decline.

If you are over 65, your current muscle strength is a better warning sign for future mobility problems than how much your strength has dropped recently. Focus on maintaining or building absolute strength, particularly leg power, as low levels are strongly linked to losing the ability to walk long distances or climb stairs. Men are at higher risk for mobility decline from low strength than women, so men should pay close attention to these metrics.
