Occupational burnout is characterized by significantly impaired sleep architecture, including increased arousals, sleep fragmentation, reduced slow-wave and REM sleep, and lower sleep efficiency, which correlates with persistent daytime sleepiness and mental fatigue.

If you are experiencing burnout, standard sleep hygiene (going to bed early) may not be enough because your sleep architecture is physiologically disrupted. Focus on reducing pre-sleep arousal and stress, as the study links burnout to increased arousals and fragmentation. Recognize that feeling unrefreshed despite adequate time in bed is a symptom of the burnout state, not just 'bad sleep habits'.
