This may in part be due to disrupted organization of thick and thin filaments in the sarcomere... Bmal1-/- and ClockΔ19 mice display an ~40% decrease in skeletal muscle mitochondrial volume. The mitochondria present in these mutant mice displayed aberrant morphology and increased respiratory uncoupling.
