Energy balance

Higher free-living physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) is independently associated with a lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adults, with a dose-response relationship where increased activity reduces risk.

To lower your risk of metabolic syndrome, focus on increasing your daily movement. You don't need intense gym sessions; adding about 30 minutes of brisk walking to your day can significantly reduce your risk. This is particularly relevant if you live in an urban environment where activity levels tend to be lower.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
In multivariate regression models adjusted for possible confounders, each kJ/kg/day of PAEE was associated with a 2.1% lower risk of prevalent metabolic syndrome (odds ratio 0.98, P = 0.03).

Why this rating

High-quality objective measurement (Actiheart) and large sample size (n=552), but the cross-sectional design limits causal inference.
