Adherence
Resistance training induces neuromuscular junction (NMJ) remodeling similar to endurance training but to a lesser extent (approx. 15% vs 30% increase in area).
Resistance training (weight lifting) also improves the structure of your nerve-muscle connections, though not as dramatically as aerobic exercise. It still provides a beneficial structural adaptation that supports muscle strength.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
a 7-week program of resistance training increased pre-synaptic area occupied by ACh containing vesicles, and post-synaptic endplate area stained for AChRs by ~15% – compared to ~30% with endurance training
Why this rating
Based on a single rodent study (rats climbing ladder); limited generalizability.

- Regular endurance exercise reverses age-related neuromuscular junction (NMJ) fragmentation and restores synaptic morphology to levels resembling young adult sedentary NMJs.Good
- Endurance training increases neuromuscular junction (NMJ) size and complexity (branching and AChR area) in young adults, whereas in aged adults, it primarily reverses age-induced expansion and fragmentation.Good
