Very Low Calorie Diets (VLCDs) under 800 kcal/day lead to rapid weight loss but result in significant loss of lean mass and are associated with poor long-term weight maintenance compared to moderate restriction.
Avoid diets under 800 kcal/day unless medically supervised. They cause rapid loss but are hard to maintain and may harm muscle mass. Moderate restriction (1200+ kcal) is safer and more sustainable.
ModerateRefutesMEDIUM confidence

- Obesity is primarily driven by a caloric surplus resulting from a Westernized diet high in fats and sugars combined with reduced physical activity, leading to increased morbidity and mortality risks for type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.Moderate
- Weight loss interventions must prioritize fat mass reduction over total weight loss, as preserving lean mass is critical for long-term health benefits and metabolic rate maintenance.Moderate
