Consumption of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) as part of a Mediterranean diet reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with high cardiovascular risk.
Replace other fats with extra-virgin olive oil in your daily cooking and dressings. Aim for 10-50 mL per day as part of a Mediterranean-style diet. Do not rely on olive oil capsules, as they do not offer the same cardiovascular benefits.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
In the PREDIMED, when assessing 24-h ambulatory blood pressure, SBP decreased −2.3 mm Hg (95% confidence interval (CI), −4.0–−0.5) and DBP decreased −1.2 mm Hg (95% CI, −2.2–−0.2) with extra-virgin olive oil after one year of follow-up [19].
Why this rating
Supported by large randomized controlled trials (PREDIMED) and systematic reviews, though capsule forms showed no effect.
