Higher cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2 peak) and higher hemoglobin (Hb) levels are associated with reduced odds of being physically inactive in CKD patients, particularly in those on dialysis and transplant recipients.
If you have advanced kidney disease, your energy levels (influenced by hemoglobin) and fitness (VO2 peak) are key to staying active. Work with your nephrologist to manage anemia, as this can improve your capacity for exercise. Improving your cardiorespiratory fitness, even slightly, can significantly increase your likelihood of being active, especially if you are on dialysis or have had a transplant.
Higher Hb and VO2 peak levels were associated with reduced odds of being inactive... VO2 peak levels had a greater effect on activity level in those on dialysis and RTRs.
Why this rating
Statistically significant associations (P < 0.001 for VO2 peak in dialysis/RTRs; P = 0.02 for Hb).

- Physical inactivity is highly prevalent across all stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), with prevalence worsening as disease progresses, reaching a nadir in patients requiring dialysis.Good
- Higher self-efficacy and being in a 'receptive' stage of change are associated with greater odds of being physically active in CKD patients, regardless of disease stage.Good
