Analysis of beat-to-beat heart rate variability (HRV) using non-linear dynamics, specifically detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) on pure sleep stage segments, can distinguish sleep stages (particularly deep sleep vs. REM sleep) more effectively than classical frequency analysis.
