Acute resistance exercise and endurance exercise produce distinct, mode-specific plasma metabolomic signatures, with resistance exercise preferentially increasing nucleotide breakdown products and lactate, while endurance exercise preferentially increasing lipid metabolites and ketone bodies.
To maximize specific health benefits, choose your exercise mode intentionally. If you want to improve fat oxidation and ketone production, prioritize endurance exercise. If your goal is to enhance glycolytic capacity and nucleotide turnover (often linked to strength and power), prioritize resistance exercise. Doing both covers a broader metabolic spectrum.
We report that the concentration of 666 plasma metabolites was regulated in response to EE, and 708 plasma metabolites changed in response to RE... The magnitude of induction of metabolites related to glycolysis and the TCA cycle such as pyruvate, lactate, malate, and AKG is substantially higher with RE relative to EE. In contrast, succinate is markedly induced by EE relative to RE.
Why this rating
High-quality untargeted metabolomics with a randomized crossover design, though limited to healthy young men.

- Endurance exercise significantly increases circulating beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), which acts as a signaling molecule that inhibits histone deacetylases (HDACs) and activates the HCA2 receptor, promoting anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects.Good
- Resistance exercise preferentially increases circulating lactate and purine metabolites (inosine, hypoxanthine, xanthine) compared to endurance exercise, suggesting a higher demand for glycolytic ATP turnover and nucleotide degradation during anaerobic efforts.Good
