Plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) often have higher sodium and saturated fat content than conventional meat, and their health benefits are largely inferred from traditional plant-based diets rather than direct evidence on the processed products themselves.
If you are switching to plant-based meats for health, read the label. They often have much more sodium than regular meat. For better health outcomes, prioritize whole plant proteins like beans, lentils, and tofu over highly processed meat alternatives.

Compared to burger patties, alternative protein burgers generally had similar calories, no cholesterol, lower fat and higher fibre, but had lower protein and often a 2–3 fold increase in sodium (Table 5)... Many marketing and media sources rely on general and well-established health benefits of vegetable-based diets compared to diets high in animal products when making claims about the health properties of PBMAs... which may be misleading.
Why this rating
The paper provides detailed nutritional comparisons in Tables 3-6 and cites specific RCTs, though it notes a lack of long-term longitudinal data.

- Substituting animal meat with plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) may improve cardiovascular risk factors like TMAO levels, but may also negatively impact bone health markers compared to meat consumption.Good
- Consumer acceptance of alternative proteins is significantly hindered by sensory challenges, including inferior taste, texture, and off-flavors, which are difficult to replicate compared to animal meat.Good
