Elevated serum Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in sarcopenic obesity drive insulin resistance and muscle protein degradation through NF-kB and FOXO/Smad pathways.
High inflammation (IL-6) is not just a marker but a driver of muscle loss and blood sugar issues in sarcopenic obesity. Reducing inflammation may be key to preserving muscle and metabolic health in this population.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
Chronic IL-6 elevations activate the transcription nuclear factor-kB and JUN N-terminal kinase pathways associated with insulin resistance... Moreover, the low muscle strength and lean body mass observed in the SO group might be explained by the activation of molecular pathways as FOXO, Smad 2/3, p38MAPK promoted by IL-6 that causes protein degradation by the ubiquitin ligases.
Why this rating
Mechanisms are cited from other literature (references 27, 30) rather than experimentally manipulated in this specific cross-sectional study.
