In overweight or obese adults with diabetes, unintentional or general weight loss is associated with a statistically significant increase in all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality compared to weight stability.

If you have diabetes and are overweight or obese, do not pursue weight loss unless it is explicitly intentional and monitored, as general weight loss is linked to higher mortality in this group. Focus instead on glycemic control and avoiding muscle loss. Consult your endocrinologist before attempting any weight reduction strategy.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
We found that compared with a stable weight, weight loss was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.04 to 1.28) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality (RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.29) in overweight or obese adults with diabetes

Why this rating

Meta-analysis of 8 prospective cohort studies with 18,887 patients; high quality studies (NOS >=7), but observational design limits causal inference.
